Gingerbread House Party

Stumble Upon Toolbar

There is some debate as to how long we have been having the Annual Gingerbread House Decorating Party, which has now evolved into the Annual Gingerbread House Throw Down, but most agree that 10 years is about right.

This year I was burning LOTS of candles in the hours preceding our guests' arrival because yesterday, about dinner time, I looked out my front door and saw this.

So, of course, we had a fish fry last night. What can I say? We are rednecks and we catch our food.

Thankfully, the guests didn't notice any residual smell, or at least no one said, "Hey! Thanks for the invite, and by the way, your house smells like Long John Silver's."

Here is how we started out the party.

Here are the little designers hard at work.

The little ones sat at the preschool table.

Here are some close up shots.

Here is the finished product.

Everyone worked for about an hour and a half, and three moms judged each house on originality, attention to detail, landscaping, and overall appearance. We had two age groups and first, second, and third place winners in each, with a grand champion overall winner.

I'm not sure I will award places next year, as some of the non-winners were disappointed. Everyone did, however, get a certificate of achievement to take home.

All in all, we had another grand time with a tried and true Smockity tradition.

That was great! The pictures were wonderful! I always look forward to your Gingerbread House Party. I did not realize I had been reading your blog for that long, but I remember at least last year's party. Hmmm! Time flies when I am having fun!

Connie! You are so awesome. We have done gingerbread houses in the past as a family (extended ones included) but we always made one really big house and had everybody help out decorating it. I'll have to post some of our old gingerbread houses on my facebook page.

Hi Connie! We had a similar gingerbread house party a couple years back, with a tiny plain house for each participant to decorate. Do you start out with mini milk or juice cartons?

Wow! That's a big fish! How much did it weigh?? (you did weigh it, right?)

Anon, I don't start out with milk cartons. The night before, I construct the "ground floor" of the houses, and then let those harden for about an hour. After I feel like the joints won't slide around, I put on the roof.

JM, Rootin' tootin' he weighed it! It was just over 8 lbs. I was expecting heavier. We all ate it for dinner and then again for lunch the next day!

How fun! I wish you were still back here so we could have joined in the fun! Looks like your two boys had a fun fishing trip!

What fun! You've inspired me to have a gingerbread house party. We had an impromptu one last year when I had a couple of my friends kids over unexpectantly when thier Dad was in the hospital. But I'm expanding this year...I hope it turns out as nice as yours:)
