When MaddieLynn was 4 yrs. old, a friend showed me this book, Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, that she was using to teach her 4 yr. old to read. I have to admit that I doubted a 4 yr. old could actually read unfamiliar words. Recognize MacDonald's? Or the word "stop" on a red sign? Sure, but not actually decode letters arranged in an unfamiliar order to sound out words in a way that would result in comprehending a passage.
Then my friend showed me how her son could read. She wrote down a short simple sentence and he sounded it out, slowly at first, and then again with confidence and a look of pride on his face!
That was over 8 years ago. I bought a copy as soon as I could after I saw my friends amazing demonstration and started right away with MaddieLynn. It really worked!
The lessons are simple and only designed to last for 15 minutes each day. There are no flashcards or worksheets or manipulatives. Just a 15 minute scripted lesson each day. The words the parents say are even printed in red. It couldn't be simpler.
The child is able to read his first story (of 3 words) on day 13! By the time the 100 lessons are completed, he will be reading on a second grade level. That's only a little over 3 months if you keep at it every day.
I am teaching my 4th child to read with this book. It has worked wonderfully for me. Be sure to use my Amazon link on the sidebar if you plan on ordering. There are several available right now.

I have been using this with Kahlan and she loves the lessons. It is fun to see her face as she realizes she can read in other places besides the book also.
Oh Connie! I have just discovered this book. And I love it too! I bought mine used from Amazon after a friend of mine gave a very good review on it.
I've heard lots of good things about this book--I definitely need to try it. Henry is past ready!
Wish I'd know about this years ago. Great tip!
I tried to get it once from the library, but I'm not sure what happened... I'll have to try again!
This is a great book my second child finished it about a month ago and he is taking off in his reading. My third child is on lesson 70 and gaining more and more confidence everyday. We get a kick out of the silly stories!
I used this with my 2 readers and we loved it! I have even passed this on to other families who have their kids in ps but are having a hard time getting them to read. Another funny- I went into our local ps for a girl scout banquet and it was held in the 2nd grade teachers room. It was neat to see 2 copies of 100ez lessons sitting on her desk :)

That sounds great! I am concerned with the way they are teaching children to read around here. It just does not make sense! It would be great if your child could already read well when they entered school!
I used this with my now 7 year old and she reads like a maniac now. I love this book! I've heard other people poo-poo it, but you know, it works. I'm fixin' to start using it with my 5yo who is not keen on reading, but I think when she sees how easy it is she'll jump right in!
I love this book. I used it to teach three of my children to read and a friend's child to read. I use it with Explode the Code.
You have been tagged for the "What’s On Your Refrigerator?" meme. It is a Meme and a contest! I'll be giginve away two free books. Read all about it at http://heartofwisdom.com/heartathome
That looks very promising! Do you think it would be successful with a 3-year-old?
Thanks for sharing this. My three-year-old is ready, but I wasn't sure how to begin.
Thanks for the info. Wanted to let you know that I linked to you in my post.
Interesting. I learned to read on my own when I was three, btw. But I will give this a try with my two little ones, thanks!
I JUST bought a used copy of this, and I can't wait to start it. I've heard nothing but good things!
My sister told me about this book...I started w/it when my son was 4 and he didn't catch on. I tried a few months or so later when he was 5 and almost instantly I could tell he was "getting it". Great book!
Having said that I got tired of the stories near the end and just started using a regular reader - worked great. It's amazing how well he is reading now.
Nichole, The book says it is approriate for bright 3 and a half year olds and average 4 and 5 year olds.
I am so glad I read this. I was just looking into this book YESTERDAY! It is great to hear what you thought about it and how it works.

We use this book too!
I'd heard of this book and was thinking about it today. Funny that you posted about it. I guess I'll be getting it soon. I'll try to remember to link from you.
I took one look at that book and thought "Say, that's the same book my Mom used to get me and my brothers started reading!" It's almost scary how often I see that book popping up nowadays. I had no idea it was so popular. Nice to see other people using it. I always feel a special kinship with other homeschooling families. (Especially if the man of the house is always switching the channels like my dad does! LOL!)

This is a great tip, thanks for sharing it! My almost three year old is eager to get going on reading so I will give it a try!
I have taught all of my children to read with this book and I look forward to teaching many more! Our cover is getting a little tattered and torn but that just makes it all the more special to me!
I am going to get this book now, I have seen so many people talk about how great it is! Thanks for the links!
