You Get a Line, I'll Get a Pole...

*Edited to add hushpuppy recipe. Scroll down.

A kind gentleman friend, an 82 year old widower, has a beautiful ranch about a 45 minute drive from town, and has graciously given our family an open invitation to use it for fishing and fun. We have enjoyed going there most Mondays (my husband's day off) when the weather is nice.

We usually see turtles and snakes and deer and wild turkeys, and once, the two oldest children nearly stumbled upon a tiny baby fawn hidden in the brush.

The Bubba likes to bring his boomerang or slingshot or BB gun for target practice.

Today, the Bubba and The Daddy got up at 5:30 a.m. to go fishing. They took bacon and eggs and the iron skillet I inherited from my grandma. After fishing for the first hour or so of daylight, they built a fire and had a hearty breakfast.

The girls joined in at a more reasonable hour to find that they had already caught our dinner.

So, a fun time was had by all exploring the woods.

Preparing the fish.**

Dinner is served!

Fishy, fishy, in a brook,
Daddy caught him with a hook.
Mommy fried him in a pan,
and Baby ate him like a man.
(Author unknown)

**Some animals were harmed in the making of this dinner.

*Recipe for Hushpuppies:
3/4 C corn meal
1/3 C flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. sugar
1 egg
2 tsp. bacon drippings, melted
1/3 C finely chopped onion
Oil for frying
Combine all ingredients together in large bowl, and mix well.
Heat oil in deep fryer to 375. Drop batter by spoonfuls, a few at a time, into the hot oil, and deep fry until crisp and golden brown, 2-3 min.
Drain on paper towels, and serve at once. Makes about a dozen.

What a wonderful things to do with Dad each week! And what a blessing for you all!

Great catching - glad I see Dad hands cleaning them ;-) - and it looks like a great dinner!

Question: Those ARE hush puppies on the plate, aren't they? Yummmmm.

Thanks, Nikki,

Denise, Those are hushpuppies. I think I posted the recipe once a couple of months ago. I'll look around for it, and if I don't find it, I'll post it. (We do actually eat green crispy things...just not with our fish!)

;-) What wonderful boyhood memories for the bubba. Who wrote the poem?

How fun! My six-year old "bubba" just bought his first fishing pole with his own hard earned money. Can't wait to go fishing with them now !!
