More Curly Girl

Stumble Upon Toolbar

Bethanie asked in the comments of my "Curly Girl" post if I would post a picture of my hair since I started following the Curly Girl routine. This was taken after church tonight. I had washed my hair this morning, and before church I refreshed it by spritzing it with *Lavender Mist, and then I put it up in a clip.

My 10 yr. old son claims this picture looks like I passed out on a wood floor, but my 7 yr. old disagrees. She says it looks like I'm banging my head against the wall. Whatever. Just ignore them.

Here's my routine:
I scrub my scalp vigorously in the shower with plain 'ole conditioner, then rinse well. Then, I use lots of conditioner and "finger comb" my hair. I make sure to carefully work through any tangles and work in the conditioner evenly. I leave it in.

Every couple of weeks I use a brown sugar and conditioner recipe to thoroughly scrub my scalp. About once a month I use a deep conditioning oil treatment that I leave in for a couple of hours. I rinse it out with a mixture of conditioner, lemon juice, and vinegar. The book has lots of recipes for homemade conditioners, rinses, and exfoliants.

If you don't want to buy the book, Got Curl? is a fabulous website that gives lots of great information on how to encourage your curls.
*Lavender Mist (from Curly Girl)
1/2 gallon water, 5 drops pure lavender essential oil, 3 empty spray
bottles
Bring the water to a boil and simmer with a lid on for 1 hour to get rid of impurities. Remove from heat, add lavender oil, stir, and replace lid. Let steep until cool, then pour into empty spritz bottles.

Isn't that great??!!

And to think -- some people pay a TON of money to get their hair to look like that. (tee hee)

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Your hair looks nice and clean, but most of the hair on the curly girl site looked greasy and disheveled. I'm still skeptical for my long hair that's down to my fingers, but I'm going to give a few things a try. Thanks.

I've been using the "Curly Girl" techniques for about 5 years now and I have hair that is all the way down my back. The less I use shampoo, the curlier/wavier it gets. I just cringe when I see someone with curly hair that has bee straightened. Yikes! It pains me.

Thanks for this post. I enjoy reading your blog!

I BOUGHT this book during the school book faire 2 weeks ago and LOVE it! It's made my natural wave stand out to, yes, CURLS! My hair is heavy enough, though, that it stretches straight during the day. Oh well. I'm never happy with what it looks like regardless. Good book/tip!

Was your hair curly before you started using the Curly Girl techniques? I got that book out from the library and and tried it for about a week. Nothing really happened as my hair is pretty straight. The only time it's curly/wavy is if I do a bun while my hair is still damp and leave it in all day. When I take out the bun my hair is curly. But it goes straight again after combing or showering.

Anonymous,
In the original post I described my hair this way, "I labeled it "bumpy." I wished it would either be curly or straight, but it couldn't seem to make up its mind, and I didn't feel like it looked good no matter how I tried to wear it."

Thanks Connie. You're hair is really lovely. I appreciate your input and ideas.

Going to go read more of the curly girl page.

Blessings,
Kimberly
