27 Pick Up

Stumble Upon Toolbar

I'll admit right up front that I stole this from Fly Lady, but I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I know a good idea when I steal one!

Fly Lady recommends what she calls a 27 Fling Boogie, meaning quickly gather up 27 things that can be thrown away or given away.

I have modified this and I use it with my children. When I call out "27 PICK UP!", my children know that each one of them should pick up and put away 27 things. They do not have to be their own items, and they can be things that need to be thrown away or put away. The idea is to pick up 27 things that are not in their places and put them where they belong as quickly as you can.

I also use this with laundry that needs to be folded and put away. I call for a "27 Pick Up" and everyone folds and puts away 27 things.

If there is any lollygagging or whining, which occasionally happens, I set a timer for 2 or 3 minutes and the ones who didn't beat the timer have to pick up extra.

That's what Works For Me when I need some quick clutter control. Check out Rocks in my Dryer for more great tips.

Oh yes, we do this too. The kids love knowing that the cleaning will not go on for hours. :)

I think you introduced me to fly lady a few weeks ago. I never made it past the sink! :-) This is a great idea. My kids sure would have loved knowing after 27 the job would be done!

I love this tip--I never bothered to find out why Flylady chose 27. My son can't count quite that high, but as we put toys away, we count them. He can count to 12, and then he says, "that's all I know--let's play!"

How funny, my WFMW was about FlyLady this week, too. I just discovered her last week, but it has already helped a lot!

I will definitely be doing this! I've heard of the 27 fling at Flylady, but I never thought of involving my kids.

Great idea!

Really good idea to include the kids! I may have to change it to 10 though for the littler ones.
