In this post, I asked if anyone recognized this quote. It is from one of our favorite read alouds, Man of the Family by Ralph Moody. It is the second in a series of nonfiction books by Mr. Moody in which he tells of life on a Colorado Ranch in the early 1900s.
The first book, Little Britches, begins when Ralph is 8 years old in the summer of 1906, and the family moves to Colorado to try their hand at ranching.
These books make us laugh and cry. They have been described as "Little House for boys" and are a wonderful example of the pioneer spirit, rich in determination and hard work. Ralph, the oldest boy and second child, often gets into trouble when he doesn't follow the advice of his parents, but is always disciplined and sees the error of his ways.
There are some rugged cowboys in the books who cuss and use the Lord's name in vain, so I skip those parts. I do like the way, though, that Ralph decides never to even think of the Lord's name in vain lest he be tempted to someday say it.
I found these books in our small public library in the adult non-fiction section. They are jewels.

They sound like wonderful books. I've been thinking about reading the Little House on the Prairie series to my kids. Maybe I'll start with the Little Britches book first.
Nikki,
These are a little more mature than the Little House books. There are some tearful moments and hard realities in them.
I did read the Little House books aloud first and was just planning on getting them out again for my middle girls.
Ahh, good to know. I guess we'll start with Little House then.
Oh, I agree... we like the Little Britches books too!
Thanks Maddie, but I think I'll just stick with my lil Addie. She's pretty much my favorite animal ever. :) And Chief is improving a little everyday so thats good - just gonna take time. :)
Also, refer to my comment on your snails post in March. j/k. ;) They do seem cute though I'm pretty sure a tragic (and seriously accidental) event would somehow befall them should they ever enter this messy house of mine! :)
Thanks for blogging about these books. I've been wanting to get back to the library for awhile and I'll definitely look these up while I'm there! :)
I came over from Holly's, and I'm so glad I did! These books sound delightful - we are a "read-aloud" family! They are on my list for tomorrow's story hour at the library! Thank you!
