Homemade Disinfecting Wipes

Stumble Upon Toolbar

** Updated: These wipes are for cleaning the toilet seat, not sweet little hineys.

I love Lysol Disinfecting Wipes for one reason: They make toilet clean up a snap for children. Any age child can be shown how to use a wipe to clean the toilet handle and lid, on top and underneath. Then, fold that same wipe and do the seat. Toss that one in the trash and with a new one, wipe underneath the seat, fold, and wipe along the rim of the bowl.

Wah-lah! A clean, disinfected toilet. The only problem is that the wipes are expensive. So, I make my own.

I use good thick paper towels. (I can usually find Bounty or Viva for 99 cents a roll.) I use 10 paper towels and cut them in half, then fold each half in half. I set those aside and mix 1/2 cup vinegar with 1/2 cup water and add about a tablespoon of Pine-Sol. I put the mixture in one of those plastic containers with a lid that is meant for keeping sandwiches fresh. I put the paper towels in slowly, letting them soak up the solution. I pour off any excess liquid (saving it, of course) and seal up the wipes.

These are stored in the bathroom to make daily toilet clean up quick and easy for my children.

You have read my mind! I have been looking for a good homemade recipe for disinfecting wipes. I'm going to try this right away. Thanks!

Brilliant! I had stopped buying the wipes, because of the price, but I really missed them. Thank you!

Thanks for the recipe! I just made some homemade wipes last week and am thrilled witht the result. They smell better, are cheaper and easier on baby's bottom than store-bought. I'll be trying this out for sure! BTW, I found you through biblical womanhood.

Ummm, I sure hope commenter Meagan doesn't use this recipe for her baby's bottom! Youch! Pine-sol?! ;)

Anyway, good idea, and I was also wondering how old your children are before they're cleaning the bathroom? My oldest just turned 3, but I'm still a little uneasy about having him clean the toilet. LOL! I figure he'd gather more germs than he'd wipe away, you know? ;)

Tammy,
My 2 yr. old empties the bathroom trash and my 5 and 7 yr. olds wipe down the toilet right now. My 2 yr. old is not ready to wipe the toilet seat just yet, but when she's a little older I'll show her how and supervise until I'm sure she's got it.

Do you think one could use Mr.Clean instead of Pine-sol?

This is great! I have been trying to think of a way to do this. My 6 year old has been using baby wipes to do this and I am sure this is much cheaper (and sanitizes better).

Yaaa! I tried it and have been sanitizing like crazy. I showed my 5 year old how to wipe down the toilet and he was thrilled with the responsibility! Honestly. Then he was begging for more things to wipe. He'll be excited to know he can wipe it down daily. Thanks again for sharing this wipe recipe!

Beth,
Yes, you can use Mr. Clean or any disinfecting cleaner.

Thanks everyone,
I'm glad some of you are finding this useful.
