Works For Me Wednesday: Grocery Lists

Stumble Upon Toolbar

Have you seen those programs for sale that map out your favorite grocery store, aisle by aisle, to make a customized grocery list? I haven't purchased one, but I thought, "Why not make my own?".

So, I went to the grocery store with pen and paper in hand. As I did my shopping, I jotted down the main items on each aisle. I used those overhead aisle markers for reference and also included things I usually buy that were not on the signs.

Later, at home, I used a spreadsheet to make my master grocer list. I put everything in order, by aisle, and tried to include anything I would ever buy.

When it's time to make a grocery list, I print it out and circle the things I need. If I need something that isn't on the list, I pencil it in, and when I'm at the store I take note which aisle it's on. Then, I add it to my spreadsheet in the appropriate spot and save my changes.

Great tip! I was thinking this past week of making a master grocery list. I wasn't sure if it was going to be blank according to aisles, or if it would have things I normally buy. Now after reading yours, I definitely will do it with things I normally buy. That makes much more sense!

That would work much better than what I do. I keep the grocery store map in my head. Which means it's completely inaccessible.

Do your aprons have pockets? They're awfully cute.

That is a fantastic idea! I'm so stealing that one (or borrowing would be a better word, but I'm not giving it back)! :) I know my store pretty well, but seems like I'm always have to go back across the store to get something that was near the bottom of my list. I try to make my list with like items together, but more so than not I'm just putting things down as I remember them. Thanks for sharing this great tip!!! Have a great day!

Carol, No pockets. Thanks!

Becky, I know a good idea when I steal one, too!

You can also check at the service dask. My local grocer has maps of the store for customers to take home. I made my own grocery list from this and I put lines for things that could change like this:
Veggies
_________
_________
_________
It really makes it quick and easy to add things to the list as you run out and I don't forget things as much. I laminated mine and use a dry erase marker. Then I transfer the items to a smaller paper list before I go.
Thanks for sharing!

I use the same sort of system. I make out our two-week menu before I leave and circle all the ingredients I will need for those meals. It really has helped to cut down on running back and forth for forgotten items.

Wonderful tip! I will have to do this, because I love to already have a list that I can just mark if I need something! It would work sooo much better! Blessings!

My head hurts just from reading all of that!

P.S. I don't even know where my grocery store is located. A Hopeful Hollar takes care of all of that mess for me. :)

Good tip, now if only I knew how to make a spreadsheet!
